HIV/AIDS African Children Orphanned by AIDS

In sub-Saharan Africa, where nearly three-quarters of all HIV-infected people worldwide live, 15 million have died from the disease. An estimated 8.5 percent of the population - 25 million of about 596 million - is infected with HIV/AIDS. About 1 million children (0-14) and 12.9 million women (15-49) are infected in the region. The map shows the percentage of adults - ages 15 to 49 - in each African country living with HIV/AIDS at the end of 1999.
