WHEN she dramatically pulled out of the MOBO Awards US diva Toni Braxton told organisers she had "a mystery illness". Next we heard that she had backed out because the prestigious music event "clashed with her birthday".

But now we can reveal the terrible truth behind her failure to make it to last week's big ceremony... one of her breast implants had exploded.

The awful mishap happened a few days before she was due to fly to Britain and perform her latest chart hit, He Wasn't Man Enough For Me and carry out a string of promotional activities.

While organisers scrambled to find a stand-in, Toni - whose song Unbreak My Heart was a worldwide smash - was in LA recovering from surgery to repair her ruptured bust.

Our spy tells us: "She was absolutely terrified when this horrible thing happened. "It was all so unexpected - it has really shaken her up. "It's such a common thing now to have implants and no one bats an eyelid when someone has it done. But when it goes wrong it can be really scary."She's fine now and getting on with life as normal."

Toni, 32, the daughter of a church minister, had her breasts enlarged in a bid to boost her boring image. With the help of a team of fashion experts and a fitness trainer she underwent a dramatic transformation from dull girl-next-door to sexy pop temptress.

Almost overnight she found herself on the cover of men's magazines everywhere and next month she appears on the front of the raunchy FHM. But her steamy new image seems to have come with a heavy price although her aides were last night playing the whole sad saga. A spokesman for her Arista label said: "We don't comment on our artistes' personal lives."
