Genentech Says Drug Helps Breast Cancer Survival

Mon Apr 25, 2005 6:48 PM ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Genentech Inc. on Monday said two late-stage trials of its breast cancer drug Herceptin were halted early after analysis of interim results showed an improvement in disease-free survival and in overall survival.

The trials, which were sponsored by the National Cancer Institute, compared Herceptin plus chemotherapy to chemotherapy alone as therapy following initial treatment with surgery for women whose breast cancer has not spread.

"The data from these very important Phase III trials suggest for the first time that a therapy that targets women whose tumors have a specific genetic mutation has the potential to reduce the recurrence of disease in early-stage breast cancer patients," Susan Desmond-Hellmann, Genentech's president of product development, said in a statement.
