Plastic nuisance under check
02/06/2002
The city's effort to curb "white" pollution caused by take-away plastic containers has shown results during the past year, reports Shanghai Evening News.
The city had collected 410 tons or 82 million used plastic containers by last October through recycling stations across the city. About 62 per cent of used containers had been collected by the second half of last year. The containers are almost out of use in some central downtown areas. The city began to pay for the used containers in 2000 to help prevent them from polluting the environment.
Dead administrative rules abolished

The move will prevent outdated administrative rules from being enforced, bureau officials said. They have been reviewing 599 administrative rules that cover the behaviour of suspects and defendants involved in bureau investigations.
5 yrs for pyramid-sales mastermind
The mastermind of a pyramid-sales organization, Qian Yimin, has been sentenced to five years in prison and fined 50,000 yuan (US$6,024) by the Jing'an District People's Court.

His network bought each set for 400 yuan (US$48), but sold it for 1,500 yuan (US$181). Qian and his associates pocketed over 900,000 yuan (US$109,000) during three months till they were caught by the police.
Mitsubishi made to pay for deception
Mitsubishi Motors Corp has been told by the Changning District People's Court to pay 60,000 yuan (US$7,376) as compensation to Zhang Juhong, 43, and provide her with a free, new engine for her V-33 Pajero jeep.
The court found that Mitsubishi had engaged in deceptive business practices when it promised but failed to provide a new engine to replace the jeep's defective engine. Zhang bought the jeep in 1997. After driving it for two months, she noticed something was wrong with the engine.
When Zhang told the firm about the problem, it promised to provide a new engine. But instead of actually doing so, it only replaced a few parts.
It's dangerous to play with fire
Two five-year-old boys burnt their faces while playing with firecrackers in Qingpu District around 9:00 on Monday, reports Shanghai Daily.
The boys, however, were in a stable condition in a local hospital.
Fire department officials said the boys had thrown firecrackers into a hole for telephone lines. After most of them had gone off, they looked down the hole when several firecrackers, whose fuses apparently took longer to burn, exploded in their faces.

The developer of the project, Hong Kong-based Pacific Concord Holding Ltd, said the boat is just a part of the commercial theme street - Shanghai Concord Plaza, being built on Nanjing Xilu.
