CTV Newsnet at 8:00 or 8:15 PM (Channel 62 in Toronto)

I'm being interviewed on CTV Newsnet at either 8:00 PM or

8:15 PM Toronto time.(Channel 62 in Toronto).

An excellent Press Release was sent out today about Health Canada's Public Forum on Breast Implants being held in Ottawa on September 29.

As most of you know, Health Canada held secret and behind closed doors meetings with Inamed and Mentor - two Corporations who applied to have silicone gel breast implants put back on the Canadian market.

Once word was leaked to the media about these 'secret' meetings, Health Canada once again committed to a transparent ministry and this Public Forum was initiated. It's only the second ever held by HC. The first was about the COX2 inhibitors and was held in June.

• These implants are advertised as new - they are not.
• They have been deemed safe after only two to three years of research - not enough time to deem them safe.
• Much has been publicized about the three panel members who have direct conflicts of interest.
• A Breast Implant Registry would be an excellent vehicle to trace and track all implants - no files or implant recipients could suddenly disappear if she became ill.
• Rupture can only be detected through an MRI.
• Who will provide each of the provinces with enough MRI equipment so the breast can be examined?
• Who will find the costs of every MRI examination?
• I am sure that each of you, as a Canadian citizen, doesn't want to have your tax dollars spent on these studies and research.
• I figure if the panel has the audacity to recommend to Health Canada that these implants should be put back on the market, then they the panel) should also recommend that Mentor and Inamed provide the funding to purchase all the necessary MRI equipment and to cover each breast examined.
• It'll prove interesting to see what aspects of this that the interviewer will choose to address.
