Dow ChemicalChief Executive Andrew Liveris is joining the Citigroup board of directors. He'll take the seat vacated by Robert Willumstad, Citi's chief operating officer, who left the company at the end of the summer.

Liveris, 51, keeps the number of Citigroup board members at 17. "Andrew has built an impressive record of success, leading initiatives that have made Dow a large and profitable company that is positioned for further success in diversified global markets," said Chief Executive Charles Prince. "Nearly two-thirds of his almost 30-year career at Dow has been spent in the Asia Pacific region, giving him a tremendous depth of knowledge that will be immensely valuable to us," the CEO added.

Like Prince at Citigroup, Liveris has been shuffling the cards at his own company. Last week, he announced a broad realignment of business groups, melding three divisions into two in an effort to put more focus on the company--and presumably get better performance.

Liveris' appointment to the Citigroup board also means there will be one less company "insider" among the directors: Along with Willumstad and Prince, Sanford I. Weill, Citi's former CEO, also sits on the financial giant's board; Weill sits as chairman. And then there is ex-Treasury official Robert Rubin, who is a member of the office of the chairman and also a board member.

Willumstad said in July he was leaving to try and find a CEO job at another company. He was passed over for the top spot at Citi two years ago, when Weill named Prince as his own successor.
