FDA Commissioner Lester Crawford resigns

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Lester Crawford, head of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, has resigned, effective immediately, the White House said on Friday.
Crawford's departure comes less than three months after the Senate voted to confirm him for the job by a 78-16 vote after a lengthy battle over his selection.
His nomination by President George W. Bush was delayed for months by charges of an extramarital affair with a female subordinate and controversy about whether to permit over-the-counter sales of a "morning-after" contraceptive.
An investigation by the Department of Health and Human Services inspector general found no basis for the charges of an affair, which were sent anonymously to the Senate.
Crawford came under fresh attack last month when the FDA indefinitely postponed a ruling on whether Barr Pharmaceuticals Inc. could sell its Plan B contraceptive without a prescription.
