VANCOUVER (CP) - The British Columbia Supreme Court has approved a settlement of a class-action lawsuit for Canadian women who had silicone gel breast implants, according to a statement released early Wednesday by lawyers representing the women.
Justice E.R.A. Edwards of the B.C. approved the settlement, which was made without any admission of liability by the defendants, it said.
"The defendants have agreed to pay between $2.5 million and $4.3 million depending on how many women come forward with claims," the statement read. "A further amount of up to $200,000 will be paid for the cost of notice and settlement administration."
The settlement is for women who had breast implants made or supplied by Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, Baxter Healthcare or 3M. The lawsuit covers women who resided anywhere in Canada other than Ontario and Quebec on Feb. 14, 1997, or were given the implants anywhere in the country other than those two provinces.
The deadline for opting into or out of the settlement is Dec. 2,
2005. The deadline for filing claims is Feb. 1, 2006.
