Dow gives former Union Carbide headquarters to UC

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Dow Chemical is giving the former Union Carbide headquarters in South Charleston to the University of Charleston, the school and Dow Chemical Vice President Alan Fowler announced Saturday.

The 11-floor facility is known as Building 82. It and an adjacent parcel of land that is also being donated were acquired by Midland-Mich.-based Dow in 2001.

The gift has an estimated value of $7 million.

The university intends to renovate the building over the next 12 to 16 months to provide apartment-style housing for graduate students of its new School of Pharmacy, which opens next August.

Dow's donation is the sixth major gift UC has received in the last three weeks. The university has raised $46.5 million in the last 2 1/2 years.

"To see the changes the gifts have brought to the university and what it contributes to West Virginia is truly gratifying," said university President Ed Welch. "We're on the move. It's been a good month."
