ADHD Deaths
Patients who take widely prescribed drugs to treat ADHD may have an increased risk for sudden death, heart attack and stroke. Over 50 deaths in the U.S. have been linked to such medications as Adderall and Ritalin. More than 30 additional deaths have been reported in other countries including instances of pediatric sudden death.WASHINGTON POST

ADHD Warning
Recent reports of deaths related to ADHD drugs have prompted a need to warn consumers about the link of these highly prescribed medications to sudden death and serious cardiovascular problems. The FDA approved Ritalin in 1955, but it has recently voted to update warning labels for methylphenidate drugs including Ritalin, Concerta, Methylin and Metadat. Two million children and one million adults in the U.S. are prescribed these drugs each month. [DETROIT FREE PRESS]

Corn Concerns
Corn tortillas are a common dietary staple along the U.S./Mexico border. Mexican-Americans each consume approximately 110 tortillas every month. Fumonisin is a toxin in corn mold that may cause birth defects such as neural tube defects as well as brain and spinal cord abnormalities. Pregnant women who ate more than 300 tortillas during their first trimester had more than twice the risk of giving birth to babies with defects compared to women who ate less than 100 tortillas.HOUSTON CHRONICLE]

Childhood Calcium
Lack of calcium in children over the age of 8 increases the risk of adult osteoporosis. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends children eat three servings of milk, flavored milk, cheese or yogurt a day. Calcium is essential for bone formation and weight bearing exercises are necessary for strengthening bones. Vitamin D is also need to absorb calcium. A recent report recommends pediatricians screen for calcium intake and bone health throughout childhood. SEATTLE POST INTELLIGENCER]

Hold the Fries
Last month the U.S. government began enforcing rules requiring all packaged food labels to specify the level of trans fats in food products. Trans fats are created through a process called hydrogenation when hydrogen is passed through liquid oil to extend the shelf life of food products. Dietary guidelines suggest keeping ones intake of trans fats as close to zero as possible. A single portion of large fries from McDonalds has 8 grams of trans fats. [MSNBC]

Neonatal Neurotoxin
One in five women of childbearing age has unsafe levels of mercury that exceeds federal health limits. Fetuses exposed to the neurotoxin have a heightened risk for neurological damage. The frequency of fish consumption is the single greatest factor influencing mercury exposure. Women can reduce the risk by choosing fish low in mercury such as cod, salmon and trout. Girls Gone Wild
Over the last five years illegal drug use by 12 - 17 year old kids has dropped by 19%. However, the abuse of prescription drugs and alcohol are increasing. Teenage girls have caught up to teenage boys in illegal drug use and alcohol consumption and have surpassed their male counterparts in prescription drug abuse. As a result, young women are suffering from more serious health consequences such as depression, addictions and STDs. [MIAMI HERALD]

Crossing the Womb
More than 30% of newborn infants whose mothers took SSRIs during pregnancy experienced withdrawal symptoms that included high-pitched crying, tremors and disturbed sleep. Expecting mothers need to weigh the risks to their infants of continuing drug therapy compared with the risk to themselves of a serious psychiatric relapse if they stop treatment. [MED PAGE TODAY]

Placenta PFOA
PFOA is a highly durable, man made chemical used in Teflon non stick pans and waterproof clothing. It has been manufactured by DuPont for over 50 years. In the past decade the Environmental Protection Agency has linked the compound to potentially negative health and environmental impacts. DuPont recently agreed to a $10.25 million civil penalty for withholding information and a $100 million class action settlement for contaminating water near one of its plants. New research suggests PFOA can cross the placenta from mother to child and cause birth defects. One study showed 99% of babies were born with trace levels of the allegedly cancer causing agent.

Determined to Decline
Last year, Americans experienced the first decline in cancer related deaths since 1930. In 2006, 1.4 million United States citizens will be diagnosed with cancer and an estimated 565,000 will die. Although cancer deaths among women actually rose, the overall fatality rate was the first decline ever recorded. This marks a true milestone in the battle against cancer lead by prevention, detection, and advanced treatment methods. [REUTERS]

Dark Chocolate Valentine
High concentrations of cocoa found in dark chocolate help improve vascular function by relaxing blood vessels. When dark chocolate contains more than 70% cocoa, cholesterol is prevented from gathering in blood vessels and therefore reduces the risk of blood clots. The semi-sweet treat also contains flavanols, a plant based antioxidant beneficial to cardiovascular function.]
