WASHINGTON, May 12, 2006 - The Society for Women's Health Research is pleased to announce three new members of their board of directors. Stephanie Burns, Ph.D., of Midland, Mich., PonJola Coney, M.D., of Nashville, Tenn., and Jill Panetta, Ph.D., of Indianapolis, Ind. began their three-year term on May 9.

The Society for Women's Health Research is the nation's only non-profit organization whose mission is to improve the health of all women through research, education and advocacy. The Society encourages the study of sex differences between women and men that affect the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease. The Society's board of directors' role is to provide direction and oversight to the staff.

Stephanie A. Burns, Ph.D., is chairman, president, and CEO of Dow Corning Corporation. Burns started working at Dow Corning as a researcher in 1983. Since that time a few of the positions Burns has held at Dow Corning are director of women's health, industry director for life sciences in Europe, executive vice president responsible for global operations and chief operation officer. Burns has also served on Dow Corning's board of directors.

Burns was recognized with the 2006 Vanguard Award by the Chemical Education Foundation. She has also been recognized as Michigan Woman Executive of the Year and has been named to Fobes.com's list of Most Powerful Women. Burns holds a doctorate in organic chemistry from Iowa State University and completed post-doctoral studies at the University of Languedoc-Rousillon in France.

PonJola Coney, M.D., is the senior vice president for health affairs and dean of the School of Medicine at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tenn. She is also a professor in Meharry's obstetrics and gynecology department. Prior to working at Meharry, Coney served for eight years as professor and chair of obstetrics and gynecology at Southern Illinois University.

Coney is a leader in reproductive medicine and is a member of the National Institutes of Health Advisory Committee on Research on Women's Health. She received her bachelor's degree from Xavier University in New Orleans and her doctorate of medicine degree from the University of Mississippi.

Jill Panetta, Ph.D., is a founder and the chief scientific officer for InnoCentive, a web-based international community that matches scientists around to relevant research and development challenges. Panetta is also a manager at Eli Lilly and Company with over 16 years experience in drug discovery research. Her research has led to the discovery of potential products to treat asthma and inflammatory bowel diseseases.

Panetta received her doctorate in organic chemistry from Dartmouth College, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California.
