The actual quake had a magnitude of 7.8 -- almost unbelievably strong. At its widest, the fault had cracked more than 6 meters apart.

Looking at these photos is even more terrifying after seeing recent pictures of the devastation in New Orleans post-Katrina. Ordinarily, sepia-toned photographs of disasters seem solemn but safely in the past. That's not true anymore.

The exhibit I'm most intrigued by here is Mark Klett's photographs. Klett researched pictures of the Quake devastation and then "re-photographed" those sites today.
