  from Dave Johns

This Wednesday marks the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. For several days before and after the solstice, the noonday sun appears to stand still in the sky -- hence the word solstice, from the Latin for "sun stands still." Now if the sun is going to go ahead stand still, I reckon we should all think about doing more or less the same.

Is It Time for a Siesta?
A siesta is a short nap taken in the early afternoon, usually after the midday meal. Research indicates that around this time people become less alert and the body temperature tends to drop -- similar to what happens to our bodies at night in preparation for sleep. Many cultures, especially those in very hot areas of the world, have a long history of taking siestas in the afternoon. Is the siesta, then, a natural phenomenon?

How Does Meditation Work?
When we experience stress during the workday our bodies react automatically in ways that prepare us to fight or flee, a physiological remnant of our wilder past when predators lurked around every bend. In cases of extreme danger, this response remains extremely helpful. But for many of us today, this prolonged state of agitation can actually cause physical damage to our bodies. One way to fight stress is meditation, which affects the body in the opposite way that stress does, restoring it to a state of calm.

My Dog Has Fleas!
Fleas. They certainly make great fodder for wonderfully unpretentious songs about our flea-bitten friends, perfect for plucking on a rusty ukulele while lazin' on a long, sunny afternoon. But in the real world they make our pets downright miserable. We humans start to itch and scratch at the mere thought of them. So what is a flea anyway, and what should a fellow do if his dog has fleas?

Top Picks - Summer Exercise Essentials  from your Exercise Guide

Exercise always gets a little more fun when the weather warms up. If you're out enjoying the summer, make sure you stock up on a few items to keep you cool, dry and sunburn free.

1) Patagonia Airius Running Hat
Before you head out for your outdoor workout, make sure you're wearing a hat...specifically, one that protects your face and keeps your head nice and cool. This hat is a big favorite of mine because of the mesh panels and the Coolmax headband. Compare it to a regular cap on a hot day and you'll see what I mean.

2) Camelbak FlashFlo
Camelbak makes a variety of hydration packs. This one is my favorite because it goes around your waist like a little fanny pack. The back fits flush against your lower back and it doesn't bounce, even when you run. You can also put things in the handy zipped pocket. It holds about 45 ounces of water...perfect for a day hike or a long run.

3) Cooler Headband
This headband/neck wrap is perfect for just about any outdoor activity. Soak it in cold water for about five minutes and wrap it around your neck or head to keep you cool while you walk, bike, run, work in the garden, etc.
