Be sure to watch "Remaking American Medicine: First Do No Harm" tonight at 10:00 p.m. (EDT) on PBS (check local listings).
Program Highlight
"First Do No Harm" takes a critical look at the infections that occur in hospitals and follows the efforts of physicians in two hospitals who are challenging their colleagues to live up to their oath to "first do no harm." In Pittsburgh, Chief of Medicine Dr. Richard Shannon is confronting an epidemic of hospital-acquired infections that are shattering the lives of their victims. In New Jersey, Hackensack University Medical Center is engaged in an effort to completely transform the way the institution delivers care through the introduction of information technology to reduce medication errors.
Did you know?
Two million of us pick up infections each year at the hospitals that are supposed to make us well. Some 90,000 die from those infections. However, hundreds of hospitals are taking major steps towards preventing these infections in conjunction with the 100k Lives Campaign. See if your hospital is one of them.
