Health Canada Lifted a 14-Year Ban on the Sale of Silicone Gel Breast Implants for Cosmetic Use

(OPENPRESS) November 15, 2006 -- Health Canada's number one priority is to protect and promote the health and safety of Canadians. Decisions to grant licenses for medical devices are strictly objective and based on evidence. Applications from Inamed and Mentor were evaluated by Health Canada's scientific and medical staff to determine if the devices met safety and effectiveness requirements.

Health Canada's decision followed a complete review of the manufacturer’s evidence, independent evidence-based studies, public submissions and an Expert Advisory Panel's advice. The Expert Advisory Panel reviewed submissions from concerned Canadians and heard directly from the public at an open meeting before it provided its advice to Health Canada.

The committee focused on several issues of major concern to women:

Potential for causing major disease, effect on breast-feeding, effect on unborn children, implications for radiation therapy, impact on the use of mammography to detect cancer, health effects given recent improvement in design and implantation procedures, and the effect on the body’s immune system.

The basic question is, is silicone safe? The committee studied and evaluated multiple documents on the history, chemistry, and toxicology of silicone implants, and a variety of consumer products-has resulted in extensive exposure to it by individuals in all developed countries.

Known for his talent in breast augmentation Dr.Trevor Born leading cosmetic plastic surgeon will now be using the Memory Gel ™ implant.. "This is good news for my patients I can now freely offer silicone implants which has the advantages of less rippling, more like breast tissue, decrease capsular contracture rate, better shape, and better sizing," says Born.

As controversy surrounds Health Canada’s recent decision Dr. Born will take viewer’s through the clinical findings, answering frequently asked question and explaining how the implant process works.
