 The Holidays vs. Your Waistline
Forget the sugar plums. Visions of homemade coconut Christmas candy dance in my head! The good news is, with a little determination and planning, we can make it through the holidays and still be friends with our scales come January 2nd! One of my favorite holiday tactics is to bring baskets of fresh fruit as gifts when visiting friends or relatives. Doing so ensures that there's always a healthful snack in the house and everyone is always more than happy to share!

Low Fat Crockpot Beef and Black Bean Stew
Come home to this mildly spicy low-fat crockpot beef and black bean stew, which makes a warming meal for a cold or wet evening. I use lean stewing beef, of course; top round is a good choice. And while it's true that the leanest cuts of beef can be tough, a day in the crockpot will tenderize even the toughest of meats.

Top Picks - Kitchen Gifts for the Low Fat Cook  from your Low Fat Cooking Guide
With Thanksgiving out of the way, and Christmas and Hanukkah on the horizon, it's time to shop. If you need ideas for the low fat cook in your family or circle of friends, or you're figuring out what to put on your wish list, here's my Top 10 Kitchen Gifts for the Low Fat Cook, or indeed, any cook!

1) Le Creuset 5 Quart Oven
I've had mine for 12 years and it's my most treasured pot. Made of cast iron with an enamel coating, it distributes heat evenly and is virtually nonstick. Le Creuset ovens are suitable for soups, stews, casseroles, pot roasts and more. A tight-fitting lid helps retain moisture during cooking. Use it on the stovetop or in the oven. It's attractive enough to bring to the table. This is one-pot cooking at its best.

2) SilPat Baking Mat
These flexible, versatile mats are a great alternative to parchment paper in baking. Made from woven glass coated in silicone, they can withstand temperatures up to 480 degrees, though you won't need that much heat in your baking. Use them for kneading and rolling dough as well as for baking cookies. These mats come in different sizes and can be rolled for storage.

3) Oxo Good Grips Mandoline
This user-friendly Mandoline is an ergonomic wonder. Its blades slice and julienne all manner of vegetables just the way you want them, slicing them thick or thin, straight, crinkle cut or waffle cut. A generously sized soft food-cover protects your fingers from the blades.
