Pfizer has halted its torcetrapib development program after it learned there was an "imbalance of mortality and cardiovascular events" in a major morbidity and mortality trial testing the drug in combination with atorvastatin vs atorvastatin alone in subjects with coronary heart disease or risk equivalents. While the drug has been plagued by blood-pressure increases, little is yet known why the once-promising drug went off the rails.
