Top Milbank Bankruptcy Partner Joins Quinn Emanuel

Quinn Emanuel Urquhart Oliver & Hedges has recruited a top bankruptcy partner from Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy.

Susheel Kirpalani had been the youngest associate ever promoted to partner at Milbank in 2001 and had served as the top deputy to bankruptcy chair Luc A. Despins, with whom he represented the creditors' committees of both Enron Corp. and Refco.

Kirpalani, 36, will become national chair of the bankruptcy litigation practice of Quinn Emanuel, working out of the Los Angeles-based firm's 85-lawyer New York office.

The recruitment is the latest coup for the 325-lawyer firm, which only handles litigation. In the past year, Quinn Emanuel has poached top litigators from leading firms including Jones Day, White & Case and Boies, Schiller & Flexner. Its appeal to partners rests on the firm's ability to offer a practice environment relatively free of conflicts with corporate clients as well as its strong economics.

Quinn Emanuel recently reported that last year it had profits per partner of almost $2.5 million.

Despin said Tuesday that he wished Kirpalani well but declined further comment.
