MIDLAND -- Dow Chemical Co. officials say Herbert D. "Ted" Doan left such an imprint that it's only fitting his name grace the grounds.

On Tuesday, company and city dignitaries will name part of the Michigan Operations site after the grandson of founder Herbert H. Dow.

Doan died in May. He was 83.

"He was one of the true good leaders from Dow's history," said Mike Hayes, vice president for corporate executive relations. "He was a CEO at a very early age, 40."

Citizens may pick up free tickets to the event, starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Midland Center for the Arts, Eastman at West St. Andrews, at the center's box office.

Doan assumed leadership of Dow in 1962. Company historians say he restructured and shaped the company, allowing it to expand worldwide. He retired in 1971.

"His vision transformed Dow from a regional entity into what has become the largest chemical company in the world, one that leads the way on several levels, from community commitment to breakthrough innovation," said Andrew Liveris, chairman and chief executive officer of Dow.

Doan also founded investment companies and remained involved in philanthropy, including helping establish Saginaw Valley State University.

In 2001, SVSU leaders named the college's $28 million science building after him.
