I've recently started a Pilates mat class at my gym. I used to do yoga a lot, and was once a step aerobics addict (which seems to have gone the way of other fitness fads, unfortunately). But I wasn't prepared for the post-Pilates muscle aches. All week long I've stood slowly from my office desk, wincing in pain. There's no question: Pilates is a great workout.

Doing the "Hundred" Sequence
Oh boy, this move gets to the heart of Pilates: crunching those abs over and over. To do the hundred sequence, lay on your back, curl your head up and hold your arms at your side, lift your legs, hold them steady, and then pump your arms up and down 100 times in a row. Seriously. OK, so if I'm doing all this work, there had better be some sort of payoff, right? Yes. While not a fat-burning type of exercise per se, Pilates does create long, lean muscles, which burn calories more efficiently.
