CBS4) DANIA BEACH Now that Broward Medical Examiner Dr. Joshua Perper has ruled that Anna Nicole Smith died of an accidental overdose of a combination of drugs, some people who take a number of medications on a daily basis may wonder about their own mixtures.

CBS4’s Dr. Sean Kenniff said to remember what combinations lead up to Smith's deadly overdose. First, Anna Nicole was giving herself growth hormone injections, or B-12 vitamin injections. Kenniff said when people lose a lot of weight, it’s not uncommon for them to do something like this.

She was also put on antibiotics after receiving an injection in the buttock that became infected. She also reportedly had a stomach flu and was taking several medications for that including some that are related to Valium.

But it was the sleeping medication that she was taking, chloral hydrate, that was the real bombshell in Dr. Perper’s autopsy report.

When taken in high doses, chloral hydrates mixed with other drugs can have a deadly impact on a body’s respiration and circulation systems in the brain, causing them to shut down. This is what killed Smith.

Dr. Kenniff points out that one reason doctors advise that you should never mix medications is because all drugs get metabolized either through the liver or the kidney. The drugs Anna Nicole was taking were metabolized through both so they ended up being transformed into a more potent narcotic than if they had been taken individually.
