Multiple sclerosis is both under-diagnosed and under-treated. It's a far reaching problem, says our Guide to MS, Julie Stachowiak. She estimates she had the disease at least 20 years before receiving the official diagnosis.

In the Spotlight
What is MS?
That's not an easy question to answer. But essentially, the disease occurs when the immune system mysteriously attacks the central nervous system, often intermittently and without warning. The result is symptoms that come and go, and range from mild to seriously impairing.

An Ongoing Tragedy
Research shows that most MS patients do not take any disease modifying therapies. If this is you, Julie says "have a serious discussion with your doctor about whether you should be on one of the disease-modifying therapies. Even if you feel good right now. Even if you hate needles. Even if you haven't had a relapse for a while."

The MS Hug - Annoying, Painful and Real
The "MS hug" is a common symptom of MS with an unfortunate name. It causes a painful or tingling feeling around the torso, or in one area on the abdomen or chest. Julie prefers to call it "the grippies."
