If there is public suspicion about a "food allergy epidemic," it's at least in large part because of the increase in peanut and tree nut allergies and the concomitant rise of nut-free schools, daycares, and classrooms. Why are kids without nut allergies banned from bringing nuts or food containing traces of nuts into school? Surely all an allergic child has to do is avoid ingesting the food? Unfortunately, it's not that simple.
