Contrasts between symptoms of summer depression and winter depression - Source: Journal of Affective Disorders, Dec. 1991
As demonstrated by this report published in 1991, researchers have long noted a type of recurring seasonal affective disorder that occurs in summer (and is known to be more prevalent in populations living closer to the equator, while winter SAD is more prevalent farther from the equator). Classification and prediction of clinical Alzheimer’s diagnosis based on plasma signaling proteins - Source: Nature Medicine, online Oct 14, 2007
International team’s controlled blinded analysis identified 18 signaling proteins in blood plasma of patients with Alzheimers; and in patients with mild cognitive impairment that progressed to Alzheimers within 2 to 6 years - "with close to 90% accuracy." Not in the mind of neurasthenic lazybones but in the cell nucleus: Patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome have increased production of nuclear factor kappa beta – Source: Neuro Endocrinology Letters, online Jul 11, 2007
Belgian researchers find significantly elevated NFkappabeta production in CFS patients vs. controls and link higher levels to more severe symptoms; suggest treatment with certain antioxidants, which inhibit production of NFkapabeta. [Source: Neuro Endocrinology Letters, online Jul 11, 2007]

Clinical trial: Multispecies probiotic supplementation alleviates the symptoms of IBS and stabilises intestinal microbiota - Source: Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics, online Oct 6, 2007
IBS patients' composite IBS score, especially distension and abdominal pain, improved with 5-month placebo controlled study of multiple probiotic supplementation. [Source: Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics. Online Oct 6, 2007]

Systematic review and meta-analysis: The incidence and prognosis of post-infectious irritable bowel syndrome – Source: Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics, Aug 2007
Review of published research concludes odds of developing IBS increases six-fold after acute gastrointestinal infection. Young age, prolonged fever, anxiety and depression are risk factors for "post-infectious irritable bowel syndrome." [Source: Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics, Aug 2007]

Meta-analysis: Gastrointestinal bleeding due to interaction between selective serotonin uptake inhibitors and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs – Source: Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics, online Oct 6, 2007
Studies involving more than 153,000 patients indicate that taking an SSRI antidepressant doubles the risk of bleeding from the stomach, but when it is taken together with an NSAID painkiller such as aspirin or ibuprofen, the risk increases six-fold, with 1 in every 106 requiring hospitalization. Moderate Exercise and Bright Light Treatment in Overweight and Obese Individuals - Source: Obesity, July 2007
Addition of bright light treatment to 6-week moderate exercise program for overweight subjects altered fat to muscle body composition by significantly reducing body fat. Fat did not decrease significantly for the exercise-only control group, though weight loss was the same. Mood also improved significantly for the light group; sleep was unchanged. Clinical trial: Short- and long-term benefit of relaxation training for Irritable Bowel Syndrome – Source: Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics, Sep 2007
Randomized controlled trial reports relaxation training - a brief group intervention - significantly improves symptom severity, general health perception and medical consumption in irritable bowel syndrome patients immediately after, as well as 6 and 12 months after intervention. [Source: Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics, Sep 2007]

Lyme Disease Presenting as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome – Source: Journal of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Vol 3 #4, 2007
Case study highlights importance of "acceptance and awareness of the possibility that Lyme disease can present as CFS" (with such symptoms as profound fatigue, cognitive impairment, Fibromyalgia, sleep disturbances, and dysautonomias), given the serious therapeutic and prognostic implications. [Source: Journal of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Vol 3 #4, 2007]

Antiviral Pathway Deregulation of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Induces Nitric Oxide Production in Immune Cells That Precludes a Resolution of the Inflammatory Response – Source: Journal of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Vol 13 #4, 2007
Belgium-based researchers including Kenny De Meirleir, MD, PhD, report findings suggesting "chronic inflammation due to excess nitric oxide production plays a role in CFS and that the normal resolution of the inflammatory process by NF-kB activation and apoptotic induction is impaired" – pointing to "new directions" for CFS therapeutic research.
