Mammograms belong at top of women's to-do lists

October 16, 2007

The latest from the continuing saga known as "The World's Gone Mad": Now there's a Web site where women solicit donations to help pay for breast enlargement surgery. Madder still, men pony up.

So, in a small effort toward a more sane world, we would a.) like to point out that this is not the kind of attention women's chests need and b.) suggest that during Breast Cancer Awareness month we direct our time and assets to prevention and survival efforts. Breast cancer deaths have steadily declined since 1990, but women must continue to make early detection a priority in their lives.

Instead, some young women who are desperate for money to enhance themselves, even though they're already attractive, are finding financial backers via myfreeimplants.com. It posts sexy photos of them and offers men the chance to "develop a connection."

Ah, the deep sense of satisfaction these men will feel after their special Internet friend goes through the surgery. But of course they'll be spared any details on the possible side effects of breast implants: the numbing and disfigurement and unlikelihood of ever breastfeeding. Not that those things are on their mind when they charge their "charitable" donation to their credit card.

Which leads us to c.) if men want to enhance women's breasts they should encourage their mothers, sisters, daughters, grandmothers, aunts and friends to get mammograms -- even if the men have to pay for it. Women would be mad not to get one.
