The truly scary thing about Halloween is how much candy is consumed, and wasted. I sort through my kids' stash and get rid of at least half of it. The rest is handed out gradually over a number of weeks. But having it in the house at all is a huge temptation. Those little fun-size bars are just waiting to be eaten. Are there any healthier options? You bet. But if you do succumb, check out our Halloween Treats Calories Calculator (below), and see how much scarfing a bucket-load of candies is going to cost you.

 A Healthy Halloween
I know that eating all that candy is fun, but having a big pile of candy to nibble at for several days just adds too much more sugar, calories and unhealthy fats to your kids' diet. Since childhood obesity is becoming a problem, it might be a good idea to keep the candy consumption under control this year.

s it impossible? Absolutely not! Whether or not you decide to go trick-or-treating, there are ways to make sure your kids have a healthy (well, healthier, at least!) time of it. But many families are foregoing the traditional door-to-door candy collection, not only for health reasons, but for safety reasons as well. So, how do you celebrate Halloween without trick-or-treating or an aftermath of cavities?

Portion Control: Treating Yourself Isn't Tricky
