Things For Which Breast Cancer Makes Us Thankful
Having breast cancer is an experience that changes you. It can strip away pretense and artifice, leaving only honesty and integrity in relationships. It can focus your fears. Betty Ford noted that cancer strikes not only the body, but also the spirit. When we are faced with our mortality, our true self is revealed. And we may become grateful for things which we previously took for granted. Here are five things for which breast cancer makes me grateful.

Evidence Relates Smoking to Breast Cancer
The American Cancer Society reports that aggressive breast cancer is linked to smoking. In a Swedish study, hormone receptor-negative (HR-) type breast cancer -- which is more aggressive and harder to treat -- was found to be more common in current and former smokers. Another study done by researchers at the University of California-Davis Medical Center found that cigarette smoking was associated with spread of breast cancer to the lungs. Those patients also had higher fatality rates.

 
Ixempra (Ixabepilone) for Metastatic Breast Cancer
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a new drug, Ixempra, for patients with metastatic or locally advanced breast cancer. The drug showed such promise that the FDA fast-tracked its study of Ixempra'a safety and effectiveness, completing their review in six months. Ixempra can be given alone or in combination with capecitabine, for patients who have already tried anthracyclines and taxanes. This drug helps prevent cell division, and in some patients, caused tumors to shrink.
