Finally! It's a Lupus Diagnosis on House, M.D.
November 29, 2007
After being ruled out many times during the past four seasons, Dr. Gregory House finally made a diagnosis of lupus. On behalf of the more than five million people around the world with lupus, and their families and friends, the Lupus Foundation of America congratulates and thanks the producers, cast and crew of the hit FOX television series for focusing greater attention on lupus.

In episode 408, entitled "You Don’t Want to Know," Dr. House, played by veteran award-winning actor Hugh Laurie, diagnoses a magician with lupus after the magician has several seizures and his kidneys start to shut down.
It has been a long-running bit on House M.D. for doctors to continually exclude lupus from the list of possible conditions. However, television shows, such as House M.D., can help millions of viewers to learn about medical conditions. While lupus had always been excluded, information about the disease was being provided to a wide audience, causing many to learn more about it.
The LFA is pleased that the show has generated attention for lupus. However, it was great to finally have lupus ruled in for a change. According to David Shore, Executive Producer for House, M.D. "It was a big moment for us as well to finally pay off this long tease of wrong lupus diagnoses." And while the story line for the magician character did not carry over to the next episode, Mr. Shore reports that viewers "can rest assured, though, [lupus] will once again be a wrong diagnosis in the near future (and again and again)."
Stay tuned! If you wish to submit your own note of appreciation to the show’s creators, you can post a message to the House M.D. website.
