ROCKVILLE, Md., Jan. 25 -- The FDA announced today it was reviewing the Vytorin cholesterol-lowering combination of ezetimibe (Zetia) and simvastatin (Zocor).

The review follows preliminary results, released by Merck and Schering-Plough, of the Effect of Combination Ezetimibe and High-Dose Simvastatin versus Simvastatin Alone on the Atherosclerotic Process in Patients with Heterozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia (ENHANCE).

The trial showed no significant reduction in the progression of atherosclerotic plaque with Vytorin over the use of simvastatin alone.

The FDA scheduled at 3:15 pm press conference to discuss its action.
