Breast Surgery Patients Prone To Infections

Tuesday, Jan 22, 2008 @12:37pm CST (Chicago, IL) -- More than one in 20 breast surgery patients develop infections at the incision after the procedure. The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention says the complication is more common than previously thought. In a two-year study, researchers found that 50 people developed infections within one year of their surgery. The study said most patients developed infections within 47 days. Researchers are warning hospitals to make sure preventive antibiotics are administered correctly before surgery, maintain meticulous hand hygiene and make sure wound drains are removed early. The study put the costs of dealing with infections at four-thousand dollars per patient.
