Breast Enlargement with Grafting of Liposuctioned Fat
You may have seen some cosmetic surgery centers advertising the use of liposuctioned fat instead of saline or silicone implants to get natural-appearing breast enlargement results. This method is currently under scrutiny from the government. Read on to find out what you need to know about this procedure.
You may have seen some cosmetic surgery centers advertising the use of liposuctioned fat instead of saline or silicone implants to get natural-appearing breast enlargement results. However, the use of fat grafting technique in combination with breast augmentation has been a recent subject of controversy in the media and among plastic surgery professionals. Many physicians and researchers are speaking out against the procedure and putting a damper on advertising that sounds too good to be true.
Breast enlargement with fat transferal is the use of liposuction to remove fat from a specific body area and reposition it to increase breast cup size. Some are saying the procedure has not undergone adequate research and that its performance may endanger patients. Others say the physical benefits are temporary, and long-term consequences may be overall very negative. What is fat grafting?
Fat grafting, or fat transfer, involves the careful harvesting of a person’s own fat cells, and their injection into another site.
Disadvantages of breast enlargement with fat grafting
· It may make detection of breast cancer difficult. One side-effect of fat grafting is calcification, or hardening of tissue, and harmless calcified cells may be indistinguishable from dangerous cancer cells.
· It usually requires multiple injection sessions.
· It is usually only able to increase breast size by one cup size.
· Mammogram results, ultrasound tests, MRI readings, and self-breast-exam results could be compromised by the presence of grafted fat cells.
· Recovery time is often longer than breast augmentation with implants.
· Fat cells have a low survival rate in the body, and may cause scarring, calcification, and cysts in the breasts.
· The final result may take as long as six months to become apparent.
· There are no conclusive long-term studies on the safety or effectiveness of this technique.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) are not backing the breast enlargement with liposuction transfer method, and instead encourage those interested in breast augmentation to consider the risks involved with choosing a procedure that is too new to provide solid safety and side-effect statistics.
Although advertisers present the fat grafting breast augmentation procedure as potentially safer or better for the body than saline or silicone implants, there is currently no verified scientific evidence to support this claim.
