Beach doctor accused of illegal drug sales

A Miami Beach doctor was arrested Monday for illegally selling prescription drugs, which led to the death of a patient in one case, authorities said.

Ali Shaygan, who practices in Miami Beach, was charged with 23 counts of distributing controlled substances outside the scope of professional practice and without a legitimate medical purpose, according to the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Florida.

The indictment also blames him for the June death of a West Palm Beach man, who died of combined drug intoxication. An autopsy found methadone, a strong painkiller, and diazepam, an anti-anxiety medication, in his system. Shaygan wrote him prescriptions for those drugs three days before his death, according to investigators.

A drug enforcement task force uncovered other alleged instances of illegal distribution in Shaygan's practices. Shaygan gave two undercover agents prescriptions after cursory medical examinations and without them presenting any medical records, the attorney's office said.

If convicted, he faces from 20 years to life in prison.

It wasn't immediately known if Shaygan had an attorney.
