Mass-Tort Designation Sought for Diagnostic Dye Linked to Disease
A diagnostic dye manufacturer, facing mounting lawsuits alleging that its product has adverse health effects, is seeking to have the litigation centralized as a mass tort in New Jersey. The suits charge that New Jersey-based GE Healthcare's contrast agent, Omniscan, causes skin and joint diseases and can permanently scar vital organs. As of mid-January, when it requested mass-tort designation, GE Healthcare faced 14 suits in New Jersey courts and 54 in federal courts nationwide.
