Dow advisor to retire, stay on board

A senior advisor at The Dow Chemical Co. is retiring from the company, but maintaining his membership on Dow's board of directors.

Arnold A. Allemang's retirement is part of the Dow policy governing management members of the board, which requires that they relinquish line responsibilities at age 60 and retire at age 65.

"Arnold has been an exemplar of leadership at our company," said Andrew Liveris, Dow chairman and CEO. "He has presided over a period of unprecedented productivity in manufacturing and engineering, and he has consistently been an active leader in the many communities where he worked throughout his career.

"We are delighted that he has agreed to remain on our board. I am personally indebted to him for being a mentor and adviser to me for many years ... a role that I know he played with literally hundreds of Dow employees."

Allemang joined Dow in 1965 in Freeport, Texas, where he worked in the solvents development lab. During his career, he worked in various technology, manufacturing and managerial assignments, culminating in his appointment in 1995 as vice president of operations and in 2000 as executive vice president.

When he was leader of Dow's operations in Terneuzen, The Netherlands in 1992-93, Allemang was instrumental in helping to revitalize the Dutch city's downtown area, for which he was later honored with knighthood from Queen Beatrix.
