by Kelly Corrigan
Kelly Corrigan finds a lump on her 37th birthday, and is soon diagnosed with breast cancer. But she has so much going on in her life - children, husband, parents, brothers and friends - that she doesn't focus on telling us about her treatment battle. Instead, she talks about her childhood with her ebullient father and practical mother. Along the way, her father is diagnosed with prostate cancer, facing it with faith and a positive attitude. Father and daughter encourage each other, and ultimately triumph.

Healthy Diet and Exercise Protect Your Health

Turn off the TV, close up your computer, put down your knitting, and get some exercise! Doing a brisk walk 3 to 5 hours each week or any kind of physical activity 30 to 45 minutes at least five days each week lowers your estrogen levels and improves your overall health. Combine that with eating a healthy diet, and you can lower your risk of breast cancer, as well as extend your life, if you're a survivor. Being sedentary increases your risk of several kinds of cancer, and may lead to obesity. Learn how exercise and diet protects your health.

When It's Not Cancer: Mastitis
Mastitis is a benign (non-cancerous) breast condition that can occur if you are breastfeeding. A milk duct may become clogged, and milk will collect behind it, building up pressure and causing swelling. This can lead to infection, as bacteria can grow in the trapped milk. The resulting pain and lump might feel like terrible, but it's not cancer.
