NEW YORK -

Shares of large pharmaceutical companies opened mostly higher Tuesday, following the broader market, as Wall Street anticipates another round of Federal Reserve interest rate cuts.

The American Stock Exchange's Pharmaceutical Index rose 4.48 to 296.98. Meanwhile, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 219.62 points, or 1.8 percent, to 12,191.31 while the technology heavy Nasdaq rose 41.28 points, or 1.9 percent, to 2,218.34. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 27.45, or 2.04 percent, to 1,304.75.

Here's how some key drug makers fared Tuesday morning:

Kenilworth, N.J.-based Schering-Plough Corp. rose 36 cents to $19.55.

Whitehouse Station, N.J.-based Merck & Co. shares rose 60 cents to $42.47.

Indianapolis-based Eli Lilly & Co. shares rose 63 cents to $49.50.

New York-based Pfizer Inc. rose 33 cents to $20.91.
