Childhood Urinary Tract Infections May Signal Serious Condition

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) in children can be a symptom associated with a potentially more serious condition known as vesicoureteral reflux (VUR), which causes urine to flow backwards from the bladder up to the kidneys. UTIs with fever are the primary symptom of VUR, which may cause kidney damage and scarring.

Currently, Deflux® (non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acid/dextranomer gel) is the only approved endoscopic VUR treatment in the U.S. Less invasive than traditional surgery, it involves injecting a substance where the ureter joins the bladder creating a cushion that effectively prevents the urine from flowing back. The majority of children treated with Deflux will need no further treatment.

Deflux is indicated for the treatment of children with vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) grades II - IV. The following treatment-related adverse events occurred in >1% of patients who underwent subureteral injection with Deflux: urinary tract infection, ureteral dilation, and nausea/vomiting/ abdominal pain. Although a rare event, the gel might block the ureter and cause the urine to back up in the kidney. Deflux is contraindicated in patients with non-functioning kidney(s), hutch diverticulum, ureterocele, active voiding dysfunction, or ongoing urinary tract infection.

Deflux is a registered trademark of Q-Med AB.
