Smokestack Injustice? Toxic Texas Smelter May Reopen
Kent Paterson, Special to CorpWatch
April 2nd, 2008
The old American Smelting and Refining Company (Asarco) copper smelter in El Paso, Texas, which has spewed out toxins for over a century, has been granted a new five-year permit. This is despite the fact that it violates international laws by polluting communities on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico
order.
CORPWATCH WINS NETSQUARED MASHUP CHALLENGE!
After a bunch of thinking, rethinking and going to the Googleplex to have our idea blessed by staff technologists, we are proud to announce that our corporate malfeasance wiki, Crocodyl, has been selected as one of the winners of the 2008 NetSquared Mashup Challenge! We couldn't have done it without all of the support from you, so thanks to all of the CorpWatchers for your the great feedback and ideas on our proposal.
NetSquared will be assigning us a few volunteer programmers to develop the project, and hopefully we can curry the favor of people in the open source community to hop on board as well. If you know any programmers or otherwise tech savvy people (or are one yourself) please contact us! We will be going to San Jose, California to Cisco Systems' Vineyard Conference Center and presenting the idea to the conference attendees, as well as working with NetSquared to develop the new web application.
Thanks so much!
