Doctor Connected With Weight Clinic Suspended

The State of Texas suspended the license of a former Houston doctor this week who's been running diet clinics all over Texas, including here in San Antonio. This comes just months after a News 4 Trouble Shooters investigation into those very clinics.

Last fall, the Trouble Shooters uncovered a San Antonio diet clinic claiming to help people drop pounds. It's part of a business called the "Internet Medical Clinics." Now, the medical board is suspending the license of the man who they say runs it, Dr. Roberto Zayas, formerly of Houston.

The board says it has determined that if he continues to practice medicine, Dr. Zayas would "present a continuing threat to the public welfare."

We sent someone in undercover to the Oak Hills Medical Clinic on Fredericksburg Road in November who asked, "Am I ever going to see an MD around here, like to go over medical records?" The man told her "I'm it. I'm it. There's no MD."

That's just one reason why Dr. Zayas is so much trouble. The medical board says diet drugs were provided to patients without the doctor ever seeing them or their charts. Plus, the panel found patients receiving injections of a medicine for weight loss, but that the medicine has never been approved for weight loss.

Dr. Zayas' suspension will stay in place until the board takes further action. The Trouble Shooters will stay on top of this and will bring you the details if his license is ever reinstated.
